Hard Water Can Mean You Bite The Dust This Spring

nsplash

You can’t hear that iconic “bum bum bum” of Queen’s epic song Another One Bites the Dust and not immediately know what’s coming next. Similarly, we can’t see the calendar starting turning towards Spring and avoid the consequence.

The beautiful Spring sun and weather also brings a lot of dust in the air. That dust not only settles inside your house and in the air but also can find it’s way into the water supply, creating the need for water filtration.

The seasonal dust can then exacerbate a problem that is already present and that is hard water. Hard water has consequences for both you physically and the wellbeing of your house so understanding and identifying a hard water problem is important.

The Causes of Hard Water

nsplashHard water sounds like a relatively harmless problem. Simply, it is the presence of dust and dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, in the water supply.

We hear all the time about how we should be ingesting vitamins and minerals so these things can’t be a bad thing, right? In water, it can be a real problem.

First off, hard water can cause physical symptoms, particularly with hair and skin, getting much worse if you are already sensitive. Skin conditions like eczema can be worsened by hard water. The minerals in the water can also wear out clothes in the washing machine faster and leave unsightly hard water spots on dishes, countertops or showers.

Using Water Softeners to Fix The Hard Water Problem

nsplashThere is an easy solution for removing the buildup of these minerals in the water supply. The cure for hard water is, sensibly named, a water softening system.

In layman’s terms, the hard water passes through something called a resin bed. A scientific process called an ion exchange occurs, which removes the deposits of calcium and magnesium.

Acting as a filter, the water softening system then produces so-called soft water, free of the excess deposits. This system is simple and efficient and only requires a small amount of monthly maintenance. Using salt, the resin bed needs to be regenerated so it can continue functioning properly.

An Upfront Water Softener Cost Can Save You a Big Repair Bill

nsplashThere are lots of possible options for a water softener system. The choice you make can be based on the severity of your hard water problem or additional bells and whistles that you may want.

For example, some basic systems require manual regeneration of the resin beds, while others can handle it automatically. No matter what, installing a water softener system can be a beneficial move from a cost standpoint.

In addition to all of the other effects of hard water, the mineral deposits can also build up in your pipes, causing clogs and, eventually, big repair bills. Using a water softener can provide you with immediate benefits and help prevent an unpleasant surprise later.

That’s a long-winded way of explaining that Another One Bites the Dust is always a song that comes to our mind in the Spring. Maybe that’s just because we are in the plumbing business and deal with these issues so much. If you have a song that reminds you of Spring, leave it for us in the comments.
