Plumbing Tips for Earth Day
As Earth Day approaches, many homeowners are looking for ways to increase their water and energy efficiency. Doing so can not only help homeowners save money but can also reduce the home’s carbon footprint. One of the best ways to do this is by investing in eco-friendly fixtures and pipes. The right fixtures can help to drastically reduce a home’s water usage. The right kind of pipe materials can increase the efficiency of the water heater, allowing the homeowners to help the environment and reduce their heating and water bills.
The Correct Pipes
Home plumbing has several different pipe materials to choose from these days. But some pipes are better than others. For instance, PVC piping is excellent for general plumbing because it doesn’t corrode over time, and it’s inexpensive. It’s also fairly easy to repair. However, PVC piping doesn’t hold up well to hot water, and it can degrade when exposed to hot water from the water heater.
PEX piping, on the other hand, is also cheap, easy to repair, and corrosion-resistant. And PEX doesn’t corrode when transporting hot water. But the hot water coming out of the water heater can cause issues with PEX. Luckily, this is easily fixed by using two feet of copper piping from the water heater before the PEX piping starts.
Like pipe materials, toilets have come a long way in recent years. Some older toilets use as much as seven gallons of water per flush. Considering that toilets account for nearly 30% of home water usage, upgrading even one toilet in a home can save hundreds of gallons of water a year.
Modern, water-saving toilets use as little as 1.28 gallons per flush. For those with older toilets, each flush could save them up to 5.7 gallons. Of course, toilets made before 1992 are the ones that use excessive water. But still, toilets made after 1992 use an average of 3.5 gallons per flush.
For those homeowners looking for eco-friendly toilets, the EPA WaterSense sticker is a great indication that they’re getting a water-saving toilet. Many of these toilets are also clog-resistant so that homeowners can benefit and save water without worrying about clogs.
High-Efficiency Water Heaters
Another great way to celebrate Earth Day and lower a home’s energy bill is by investing in a high-efficiency water heater. There are two major types of efficient water heaters: those with tanks (traditional) and tankless water heaters. Those who want to stick with a conventional water heater should look for the Energy Star sticker, as this indicates efficiency.
But for those homeowners ready to take the next step, tankless water heaters are the way to go. Traditional water heaters have to continue heating the water in the tank to keep it ready in case the water is needed. But when hours go by and no hot water is used, the energy required to heat the water is wasted. Tankless water heaters heat the water incredibly fast as soon as it’s called for at the faucet. They also last nearly 10 years longer than traditional water heaters, on average.
