The History & Significance of Memorial Day

Memorial day "remember and honor" banner

Memorial Day has been celebrated on the last Monday of May for many years to honor those who fought and died for our country. It’s because of them that we have many of the luxuries we enjoy today, such as air conditioning and heaters.

In this post, we’ll discuss some of the history of Memorial Day and some of the reasons we at Comfort-Air Engineering & Primo Plumbing, Inc. honor this holiday.

Air conditioning and heaters weren’t available during the Civil War era; the honorable soldiers who fought in this war had to find other ways to keep themselves cool.

People would open windows to create cross drafts. That means people would have to open windows and doors to get air flowing through their houses.

1. The Original Name of Memorial Day: Decoration Day

Man in top hat walking down street with trees alongsideMemorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. The Grand Army of the Republic established it as a day for people to decorate dead soldiers’ graves with flowers after the Civil War.

It was declared that this day should be celebrated on May 30, because that was when flowers were in full bloom. It was renamed Memorial Day in 1966, and President Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, as the official birthplace.

2. May Is a Time To Remember the Importance of the Armed Forces to Our Country

The military celebrates this day by doing military exercises to honor members of the military who have died protecting our country and to show civilians how far they’ve come. It was created on Aug. 31, 1949, when Louis Johnson established it to replace the separate holidays each branch of the military celebrated.

The first public celebration of it was on May 20, 1950. Now, observances and festivities start all over the nation a week before the holiday. They include B-36 bombers flying over each state capital, 10,0000 troops and veterans marching in Washington, DC, a parade in New York City that has over 36,000 participants, and other parades, air shows, and receptions held nationwide.
